Hmm. A lot of this film's fixation on Dzerzhinsky's early life and fatherlessness leading to his psychological state seems too simplistic, even fictionalized. FD was tortured as a political prisoner by Nicholas II's men. This makes a much stronger motivation than the father hypothesis. (Side note: His life shows that torture doesn't "work." 11 yrs of imprisonment and torture by Tsar's guards turned Dzerzhinsky into a complete terror that (as founder of CHEKA) eventually outdid the Tsar's own police in state violence...)

Every time I hear the name Felix Dzerzhynsky I'm reminded of the book ''The Cheka'' by George Popoff, he met him while imprisoned in Lybjanka after having been arrested by the Cheka from the Metropolian hotel.

Starting from the very beginning: it is far from a fact that sister Wanda was killed by brother Felix; most likely it was Stanislav, who was keenly interested in hunting all his life. In any case, it was, of course, a tragic accident.

I wouldn’t say he was a serial killer. A lot of repression was done by units he had no control over, and he stated openly that he didn’t want to lead an organization that would repress the peasants. He is primarily a symbol of anti-bolshevik propaganda; as far as Bolsheviks are concerned, he was one of the better ones.

@@onefodderunit HE explicitly didn't; others in the Cheka did.... Also, he implemented measures where the unlawful use of force on prisoners could get agents arrested or even killed. Wile the VChK did bad things, it was mainly NOT Felix's fault. And as far as "millions" goes, that figure is inaccurate. I'm a capitalist, and even I acknowledge that. Also, he didn't support it, and later within the GPU, OGPU, and early days of the NKVD, torture was looked down upon by agents as it was seen as a bad way to extract information. Don't believe everything seen in documentaries. I've seen some good ones, and I've seen some that were god-awful. Check sources yourself.

Both Dzerzhynsky and Heydrich thought and did evil. We should never excuse the bad actions of those who support an ideology we may have sympathy for. The liberal guillotine, the soviet bullet and Nazi gas are all wrong even parts of each ideology have good things in them. Liberalism supposedly allows for a person to express themselves, communism supposedly promotes fairness and supposedly Nazism promotes love for ones own people. The results have unfortunately been the opposite for all three ideological schools. Liberalism censors because of wokeness, communism created new elites and Nazism destroyed Germany. We all do evil if only a small scale.
